Welcome
Soroptimist International Edmonton is honored to be one of the first clubs to be chartered in Alberta. Soroptimist International of Edmonton was chartered in 1936, and since then has contributed to the well being of our Edmonton area community and communities throughout the world.
Soroptimist membership provides women a unique opportunity to do meaningful, life-changing work in an atmosphere of fun and friendship. Soroptimist membership provides a variety of benefits which include:
-
Leadership – Soroptimists develop new skills, enhance professional capabilities and leadership opportunities at all levels of the organization.
-
Networking – Associating with other women representing a variety of professions facilitates valuable business contacts.
-
Convenience - Belonging to an association with organized programs and professionally developed resources frees members from administrative constraints, while enabling them to concentrate on providing volunteer service.
-
Diversity – By participating in projects that address the needs of women throughout the world, you’ll come to a better understanding of women from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
-
Friendship – Cultivating relationships with other women who have similar interests and values is a central aspect of Soroptimist membership.
-
Fulfillment – Working on projects that improve the lives of women and girls leads to personal satisfaction and recognition from the community.
In the Edmonton region in the last few years we have supported the YWCA, E4C's Women's Emergency Accommodation Centre or WEAC, Compassion House, Candora Society, WINGS of Providence, Women Building Futures Society, Alberta Cancer Foundation/The Weekend to End Breast Cancer, E4C School Lunch Program, WIN House 1,2 and 3 and ACT Alberta, etc.
We annually participate in Soroptimist International of the America's three award programs - Women's Opportunity Award, Violet Richardson Award and the Ruby Award. As well we particpate in international projects such as Project Sierra, the Project Five-O and the December 10th President's Appeal which this year is for birthing support for women who have nothing - no house or hosptial or nurse to support them during a birth. Fifty women a day around the world die from childbirth still so we are learning to support birthing women best by supporting education for local women to help their neighbouring women during childbirth by supplying kits to help ensure a clean safe birth in Papua New Guinea this year. These kits we support being developed can be used anywhere in the world to help women have a safe birth! Call 780 903-0426 to support other women this Christmas!
SI Edmonton has been host to several Soroptimist conferences, over the years and to Soroptimist guests from other countries, and we have Friendship Links with clubs in England and Japan. After the shock of the Eathquake and Tsunami in 2011; SI Edmonton sent ""Thinking of you" cards in light of Japan's large resulting Tsunami damage and large loss of lives! Later we have sent our linked Japanese SI clubs some Japanese styled needleworked items made in Edmonton by Japanese artisans living here. They include a make up bag, Kleenex holder anda business card holder or glasses holder - all the things any sucessful business woman needs to be sucessful. In addition SI Edmonton is applying for another friendship link in the Lviv Ukraine area! Call 780 903-0426 for more information. |
