[Edmonton, Alberta] - Soroptimist International Club of Edmonton (SIE), is celebrating International Women’s Day on March 10, 2019 at the Chateau Louis Conference Centre at 11727 Kingsway NW, Edmonton. We will be announcing four (4) awards totaling almost $10,000.00; three “Live Your Dream Awards” and the “JOY Award”. These awards honour outstanding women from the Edmonton region! The Live Your Dream Awards are given to female adult students who are heads of their household and who are attending post-secondary school or trade school, while at the samt time supporting a family with children or aging parents. The Soroptimist International Club of Edmonton’s JOY Award is given to an Outstanding Woman who leads the community in the reduction of harm from Trafficking and Prostitution. The award is named after Joy Smith, a past MLA and MP from Winnipeg who spearheaded and carried legislation through of a number of successful initiatives in Canadian Parliament to combat human trafficking.
On a worldwide basis, we are announcing more than $2.1 million is provided in cash grants to women in need like these winners this year. Since this program’s inception in 1972, approximately $30 million has helped tens of thousands of women to achieve their dreams of a better life for themselves and their families—leading to stronger communities in 80 countries and territories, across the world. In addition to the JOY Award and the Live Your Dream Awards, Soroptimists support the Dream It, Be It Program providing girls with tangible strategies to accomplish career goals. Soroptimists power the LiveYourDream.org—an online community that offers volunteer opportunities in support of women and girls. The main mission of Soroptimists is to improve the lives of women and girls through programs leading to social and economic empowerment. The Soroptimist Dream Programs work to ensure women and girls have access to the education and training they need to reach their full potential and live their dreams.
Soroptimist International Club of Edmonton (SIE), is 87 years old and is part of a global organization; Soroptimist International of the Americas which is headquartered in Philadelphia, Pa and it is an organization that relies on charitable fundraising to support its programs. We encourage everyone to take part in the many and diverse SIE club projects to improve the lives of women and girls and their families in the Edmonton region. Soroptimist International Club of Edmonton meets on the Second Tuesday of the Month plus hosts another event each month. All women are welcome to become members and all people are invited ot support our quality programs.
